Like a ribbon, the South Harz gypsum karst belt runs through the region from east to west. The karst hiking trail does the same. The quality of the rock here is so unique that it can also be called white gold. In many places along the trail you can see how this rock has shaped the landscape and is still shaping it today. Individual karst phenomena show what nature is capable of.

The brick-red Hohe Schrecke tree guides you through the primeval forests of Hohe Schrecke and Beichlinger Schmücke and passes charming villages around the range of hills. Again and again, there are wide views of the Unstrut floodplain on one side and the Thuringian Basin on the other. The beauty of the Großer Hohe-Schrecke-Rundweg is its rich variety: fields, forests and meadows, but also hidden valleys and the dense, primeval forest in the Wiegental valley are touched by the route.

The Harz Mountains are known for their forests, meadows and also for the steam locomotive of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, which winds its way through northern Germany's highest low mountain range. If you haven't ridden it yet, you're missing out. What better way than to combine this experience with a hike through the southern Harz?

The whole diversity of the Hohe Schrecke: primeval forests, great views, graceful orchards - and as a special highlight the suspension rope bridge over the Bärental. Over a length of 13 km, you will gain insights into the entire spectrum of species-rich habitats in and around the Old Forest: from scattered fruit meadows and richly structured forest edges to its primeval core.

The Kyffhäuser, the smallest low mountain range in Germany, or at least one of the smallest, but in any case a legendary one. Who doesn't know the story of Emperor Barbarossa, who still takes his nap in the mountain and only checks every 100 years to see if the ravens are still circling? But the landscape that you can discover along the Kyffhäuser Trail is also legendary.
